Smoke alarms

Mains-wired and interlinked smoke and heat alarms fitted and tested in homes and rented properties.
Mains-wired with battery backup
Interlinked so every alarm sounds
Heat alarms for kitchens
Mains-wired smoke alarms are connected to the property's electrics and have a backup battery, so they keep working when a battery runs down and cannot simply be taken off the ceiling and forgotten. Interlinked alarms are connected to each other, by cable or by radio, so when one goes off they all sound. That matters most in houses where you might not hear an alarm on another floor. We fit smoke alarms in hallways and landings and a heat alarm in the kitchen, where a smoke alarm would keep going off with cooking. Most jobs are replacing old battery alarms with a mains-wired interlinked set, replacing mains alarms that have reached the end of their life, or adding alarms as part of a rewire or loft conversion. Alarms last about ten years, and the expiry date is printed on the back. Each alarm is tested once fitted, and we show you how to test and silence them. The price depends on how many alarms you need, whether there is already a supply at the ceiling, and whether radio interlinked alarms would save running new cables through finished ceilings. Tell us how many floors the property has, whether it is owned or rented, and what alarms are there now; a photo of an existing alarm helps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need mains-wired alarms?
In a home you own and live in there is no legal requirement in England, but they are strongly recommended. New builds and many building projects must have mains-wired interlinked alarms under building regulations, and landlords must have a working smoke alarm on every storey.
Should I choose radio or wired interlink?
Wired interlink suits a rewire, when the cables can go in with the new wiring. Radio interlink is often better in a decorated home, because each alarm only needs a local supply and nothing has to be chased into the walls between floors.
How often should alarms be tested?
Press the test button once a month. Replace the alarm when it reaches the expiry date on the back, or sooner if it keeps chirping after a new battery.
